Shuri-Ryu Karate

In 1946, after returning from Naval service during World War II, Robert A. Trias opened the first karate school in the continental United States.  His karate knowledge was the results of training with a certain gentleman he encountered while stationed on Tulagi, in the Solomon Islands.  As the years progressed, Robert Trias would have the opportunity to train with many karate greats of the time.

What we have today, is a system of Karate with Okinawan tenets, concepts and methods of application.  The karate first brought to the USA by master Trias has flourished and gained great recognition.  We are known as a comprehensive martial, in that ‘karate’ is not our only method.  It is our core foundation.  Within our training we have applied technique stemming from numerous other martial arts concepts.  Sweeps, reaps and takedowns to include throws are incorporated in interpretive movement. Chokes and ‘neck cranks’ are also found in many applications. Armbars and joint control is a strong part of our training as well as tui-te (a tendon/joint/nerve complicity art). There are also training aspects of pressure and vital strikes from kyusho-jitsu (targeting the meridian system).  much of what we do in our karate is diversely different than many other systems and styles.

A distinct part of our training seen in our self-defense, is in our ability to take the opponent to the ground and subdue him/her. Using many aspects of the forementioned techniques, our intent is to immediately counter an attack within 3 to 5 seconds, rendering our attacker helpless and unable to continue.

Our invitation is open to you!  Come train with us in our dynamic art.  Continue to our Contact page to find how to do just this…
